About
Dan is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) and has 16 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and engineering geology, with professional work both nationally and internationally (see map for locations).
His expertise spans projects involving dams, heavy civil engineering, permafrost in Alaska, water retention structures in the Atacama Desert of Chile and Peru, and training engineers and technicians in Guatemala and Mexico. Early in his career, Dan traveled throughout the Americas and the U.S., tackling challenges such as karstic limestones, sinkhole investigations, geotechnical structure repairs, drone technologies for inspections, and a wide range of geological issues. He has also worked on landslide mitigation, rock slope stabilization, geological risk assessments, and utility projects.
Dan’s passion for soil and rock laboratory testing began as a graduate student at Colorado School of Mines, and it remains a focus throughout his career. Despite graduating nearly two decades ago, he continues to research, present at conferences, and advocate for geotechnical engineering as a career for the next generation. He also collects historical engineering books to preserve and learn techniques from the past while actively researching new technologies, including underwater and aerial drones for improved designs.
In forensic engineering, Dan has worked on insurance claims related to vibration from earthworks, including issues with well drilling, basement flooding, and foundation damage remediation.
Dan also volunteers in his community, having designed a French drain system for the Harwinton Fairgrounds to prevent flooding, and contributes to local commissions focused on housing.
When not engaged in engineering projects or community service, Dan enjoys tending to his flock of sheep, chickens, and goats. He built all the infrastructure on his homestead by hand, including designing and constructing French drains to keep his 1830 colonial home’s stone basement dry during Connecticut’s spring rains.
